The oceans are absorbing huge amounts of CO2 and heat from global warming. The extra CO2 causes acidification and this disturbs the growth of shellfish and marine ecosystems. Marine permaculture can reverse this process in a profitable way. The Climate Foundation has developed a system where wave energy creates an updraft with a lot of nutrients. This stimulates the growth of kelp on the structure. The kelp can be used as a food source or feedstock for biofuels. The kelp growth lowers the acidity levels in the water so the structure is also a good habitat for clams and shells. The system is open to fish so they also profit from the improved conditions.
